Meeting the challenge of finding comfortable and chic travel clothes with sustainable fair trade clothing company, PrAna
Being familiar with eco clothing company, PrAna, I knew that their website featured an assortment of incredibly fit-looking people. An otherworldly lot of individuals is to be found here – hanging 10 in Hawaii, dangling from cliffs, and bending themselves into to yoga positions I can only hope to aspire to.
So when they contacted me to review an outfit, I admit to wondering if they had the wrong Travel Belle. But with a customer base they describe as “fun-loving, soulful people who travel well, play hard and care about the impact they have on the world around them,” I knew I wanted to take a closer look.
From my experience female travelers want two things from their travel clothes.
1. They must be comfy and practical for whatever adventure awaits – from flying across time zones to pounding the pavement in world capitals to cleaning up nicely for a night out.
2. They must be stylish. No one wants to feel frumpy! Depending on where we are visiting, we may either want to stand out or not – but when we want to stand out, we want it to be for the right reasons.
Taking their inspiration from athletes and yogis, I thought PrAna’s travel clothes would likely have the comfortable part covered. But would they look good and be appropriate not just for younger Travel Belles, but for a middle aged woman who considers herself young only in her own mind? With their bold use of color and pretty silhouettes, I was hopeful.
I chose the Laine skirt in Blue Jay to anchor my outfit. I adore the bold color, length, and lace detail at the hem. It’s been too cool to wear this lightweight piece much yet this spring, even last week in Louisiana. But I did throw it on with a light sweatshirt, jean jacket and flats to wear out to dinner one evening. The fit is fantastic and flattering. As a dedicated dress wearer when traveling in the warmer months, this skirt will undoubtedly get tons of use. I look forward to wearing it this summer during my jaunts around the Southern USA and my several month stay in Europe. To top it off, when it’s rolled up, it takes up hardly any space in a suitcase.
Instead of getting the Alba tank that is featured on the PrAna site with the Laine skirt, I opted for the Kiki top. In retrospect, I think the Alba tank would pair best with this skirt. The Kiki top is cut to be loose at the bottom and looks much better worn either tucked in (or not) with slim fitting jeans. But the up-side is I have already been able to wear this shirt a lot, just not with the skirt. It is one of the nicest quality quality tops I have ever seen – so soft to the touch, but with a bit of weight, so it hangs quite elegantly. Again it’s the details that make the shirt special. The flutter sleeves, embroidered neckline and wood ring that gathers the fabric in the back up the style factor of the piece.
A scarf and a hat from PrAna completed my outfit. Nothing pulls a look together faster than the right scarf in colors you love and the Leena scarf fit the bill. It’s silky soft, has all my favorite colors and and isn’t too big or bulky. I’ve been wearing this piece constantly over the past couple of weeks and have gotten tons of compliments on it.
Often when we travel, we forget things like sunscreen. A hat with built in sun protection makes it easy to run out the door knowing you’ll be protected. Hat styles can be hit or miss, but PrAna’s Andrea hat is a winner. Living at the beach and having raised two children here, sun protection is a huge pet peeve of mine. I buy at least one or two sun hats every summer and wear them constantly around town and also pack one when traveling. As with all my PrAna clothes, I really like the way the piece feels and looks. The wide brim features just enough stiffness that it is chic without looking floppy or too groovy. An adjustable tie ensures it remains comfortable and stays on in a breeze.
I’m a PrAna convert. It’s nice to know such beautiful and practical clothing with a great eco-minded mission and sensibility, isn’t just for the most fit looking and youthful among us. To check out their spring line, visit here.
