Heritage and History in Queensland, Australia

While Australia is justly known for its glorious beaches and wild bush country, there are also spots off the beaten track rich in history and quirky characters. One such place is the Glengallan Homestead and Heritage Center, a 19th century country house near Warwick, Queensland.

The Hiding Place: Haarlem, The Netherlands

In 1940 the Nazi’s invaded Holland and before long were rounding up Jews and political dissidents, sending them off to prisons, concentration camps and forced labor. In a tall, narrow home just steps away from the Grote Markt, an elderly clock maker and his two unmarried, middle-aged daughters put plans in motion to save as many as they could.

Standing atop the sand dunes of Main Beach I shook my head in wonder at the broad expanse of dazzling white sand stretching as far as my eyes could see. Turquoise waves crested and crashed onto the beach and gulls teetered along the sand looking for tasty morsels to be tossed their way.
