Across The Cafe Table: Where do you most want to go in 2012 but haven't been yet?

Welcome to Across the Cafe Table where every second Wednesday we ask a question and share our answers

Question this month: In 2012 where do you most want to go but haven’t yet, & why?

Briana:

Two thousand twelve is going to be a great year. I can already feel it. And without having traveled a whole lot in 2011, it’s about time I make some travel resolutions.

This year, “Explore Ireland” is at the top of my list. Now, I know that might seem strange given that I moved to Dublin in September, but setting into life as an expat the last few months hasn’t left much time for travel. Since arriving, though, I’ve learned that this small country offers a long list of things to see and do, with infinite historic sites, plenty of adventure activities and even a budding gastrotourism industry boasting more than meat and potatoes.

For example, I’d love to soak up Ireland’s ancient history with a trip to the world-famous tombs at Newgrange. For some relaxation, I’m dreaming of a trip to County Sligo, home to renowned seaweed baths. And to treat my taste buds, I want to visit Kinsale, a coastal town known as the Food Capital of Ireland.

Though it’s the size of the state of Indiana, Ireland is jam-packed with beautiful and fascinating places to visit, and now that it’s all in my own backyard, I’m making my goal for 2012 to be a bit nearsighted when it comes to travel.

Margo:

You know the feeling where there are so many of one thing to choose from that you end up not choosing anything? There are so many great places to travel that I haven’t been. I would absolutely love to visit all of them, starting tomorrow (in my dreams), yet part of me is afraid to start listing them. Why? How about if I name a place and don’t get there?

I’m going to answer that for you and for myself:

Who cares? How about if we don’t get to one of the long list of places we’ve never been that we want to go in 2012? Does it really mean anything? (No)

But then why name a place that there’s at least a decent chance you might not get to at all in 2012?

Because dreaming is always the first step in anything, but unfortunately it is also often the last. The secret is in the next steps: name a destination and give it a deadline (2012 or beyond.) Our bucket lists weren’t built in a day and neither are plans to start executing them!

I would most like to go to Australia in 2012. There I said it. I could list a dozen other places too, but I’m just going to leave it at that. I’ve always wanted to go to Australia and now I’ve got even more incentive! Travel Belle contributor and dear friend, Krista Bjorn lives there!

If we all start planning something big now, just imagine how much closer we’ll be, God willing, this time next year. And who knows, maybe we’ll even actually go. May all you travel dreams big and small come true, sooner, rather than later – and hopefully a few good ones in 2012! Now let’s all start planning!

Now we really want to hear from you! Link below, being sure to link back here from your own site, and/or simply comment below… Tell us: Where do you want to go in 2012?

Parts of South America are calling me already – Peru, Argentina and Chile in particular! But I have a problem. South Africa, Namibia and Botswana are calling me too. I’m torn and I’m not sure which way to go! Costs involved will most likely dictate where I go but at least it’ll be a suspenseful wait until the moment arrives when the bookings will be made. 2012 will definitely be a fabulous travel year :)

Brianna, I love the idea of you exploring Ireland this year. I loved every time I spent there. :-) Margo, I’m thrilled to pieces you want to come visit me in beautiful Oz. You are ALWAYS welcome!! :-)

Venezia, my adored beautiful lagoon city, is calling to me, as she often does. And it’s been too long since I last smelled her funky canal air, basked in her stunning sunsets, and was last lured by her decadent and romantic aura. Another place to visit on my must list is Paris, France. My life has changed so much since I was last there as a young girl, I need to be there as a woman!

Bari, Italy. Get a bicycle and just roam up and down the area, taking in the fresh air, eating lots of pasta and chocolates, washing it all down with hearty locals wines, learning to sing loud and clear…
Well, maybe that last one might not be so easily achieved!

I’ve always wanted to visit Ireland, ever since my flight home from Italy had to stop off and refuel there. Can you imagine landing in such a beautiful place but having to stay on the plane. It was torture. Ever since then we have said that Ireland is somewhere we need to visit!

Canada is mine, I’ve wanted to go for years but something always seems to have got in the way, but this year is going to be the one! Vancouver, Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary and wherever else I can fit in are on the itinerary so far, and I’m hoping to see how many of the Canadian cliches I can tick off (snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, grizzly bears, beavers, hockey, Mounties, maple syrup…) on a three-week road and rail trip. Just need a good flight sale now…

I had planned to visit Syria and Lebanon but events in the Middle East put a stop to the idea. Have visited Turkey, Jordan, Isreael and Egypt but it looks like I’m not going to be wandering in souks for a while. So I’ll concentrate on Europe this year.

I too have many places on my list but in 2012 I would like to finally get to Spain. I would also like to make a trip to South America; Colombia in particular. I can’t wait to read about all the places that 2012 takes you all.

Great idea to explore on your own doorstep, Briana – it’s all too often overlooked. And Margo, I share your dream – the more I hear about Australia, the more I think I’d love it.

Central Asia! Kyrgyzstan, because I still have to look it up to see how to spell it and it’s someplace I’ve never dreamed of visiting. Using the wedding of a Kyrgyz friend as fuel, we just might make it there this summer.
